Say Hello To Aloe Vera…

Jan 30th, 2009 | By buddy1 | Category: BeWell Blog Posts, Essential Products, Holistic & Alternative Medicine, Nutrition, Skin Care & Dermatology

Nearly 4000 years have passed since the benefits of Aloe Vera were first implemented. At that stage, Aloe Vera was much like a baby, whose full potential was yet to be routinely acknowledged and harnessed. However, century after century, the evidence of Aloe Vera’s medicinal and topical benefits grew stronger and more widespread.

The Aloe and The Ancient

  • When Alexander the Great conquered the Aloe Vera rich island of Socotra, his objective was to use the Aloe plant’s healing properties to treat his own army’s wounds and intestinal afflictions.
  • Cleopatra, the immortalized Queen of Egypt, used Aloe Vera to maintain her illustrious beauty and keep her skin smooth and supple. The Ancient Egyptians also used Aloe Vera to preserve their mummies.
  • The Ancient Chinese used Aloe Vera to threat their burns, wounds, and reduce fevers.
  • The Ancient Romans and Babylonians too believed in the medicinal characteristics of Aloe Vera.
  • King Solomon cultivated Aloe Vera plants for topical and medicinal purposes.
  • Aloe is even mentioned in the Bible several times.

Aloe and The "Not Too Ancient" Years

  • Native American healers used Aloe Vera to treat a variety of ailments. Known as the “Wand of Heaven” to Native Americans, the inner gel of the Aloe Vera plant was used to treat skin disorders and flesh wounds.
  • Tribal shamans have long used Aloe Vera to treat animal bites and internal cramps.

Aloe Vera Today

  • These days, much like a prodigy child, the Aloe Vera plant has grown up and blossomed into a “plant among plants”.
  • In 1959 the FDA concluded aloe gel had a positive healing effect on skin tissue. The FDA’s acceptance of Aloe Vera’s healing properties came right after the Atomic Energy Commission’s study at the radiation burn center at Los Alamos Laboratories in New Mexico, where Aloe gel was used to effectively treat radiation burns.
  • In Africa, applying whole Aloe leaves to the affected area is used as a treatment for wounds.
  • In South America, parents coat their children’s arms and legs to keep the biting insects away.
  • Today, Aloe Vera is taking its rightful place as a leader among natural remedies, as many in both the traditional medicine and alternative medicine fields have come to understand and appreciate the curative powers of this remarkable plant.
  • Aloe Vera is a now officially a leading treatment for burns, scrapes, and skin disorders.
  • Thanks to dedicated professionals at prestigious research facilities such as the University of Texas, Pennsylvania College, and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Fukuyama University in Japan—we now know that the Aloe Vera plant  contains a heterogeneous mixture of more than 200 individual constituents, including polysaccharides, glycoproteins, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals.
  • Recent studies have confirmed Aloe’s remarkable anti-inflammatory properties.
  • And did you know that Mohan Gandhi ingested Aloe Vera to help sustain his energy during his fasting campaigns?
  • Among the Aloe plant’s nicknames today are: "the silent healer", "the first aid plant", and "the miracle plant".

  1. My mother had an aloe vera plant while I was growing up. Whenever my siblings or I burned ourselves, she would break off a piece of the aloe plant and rub its juices on the burn instantly relieving the pain. I have an aloe plant now, though one much smaller than her 30 gallon one, and I’ll always keep one in the house. It’s an amazing plant and easy to tend.
