Trimming Your New Born Baby’s Nails: The Correct Way

Aug 17th, 2009 | By buddy1 | Category: Children's Health, Health Tips, Skin Care & Dermatology

You might find this task very challenging on your part as a parent. Trimming your baby’s nails may be as intimidating as anybody thinks but it is necessary to do this to help prevent the baby from scratching his or her skin while playing.
No need to be intimidated. Just follow these suggestions that the Nemours Foundation offers:

  • Have someone else, or your partner hold your child while trimming his or her nails.
  • Look for a place as well as a position where you and your baby are comfortable with, such as trimming your child’s nails while in a rocking chair, or have your child sit on your lap comfortably.
  • You may want to do the trimming activities while your child is asleep.
  • Hold your child’s palm and his or her tiny finger to make sure that the fingers don’t move as you trim the nails.
  • Try using infant clippers or nail scissors which are designed for children’s use.
  • Instead of using the rough part of a nail clipper to file the nails, use an emery board especially made for infant’s use.
  • You may not be able to do this perfectly the first tie, so do not panic if you notice some blood. Dab the cut using a sterile gauze but never use bandage. Your child might be able to remove the bandage and put it into his or her mouth, which can lead to choking.
  • Make it a habit to trim your child’s nails for at least once every week, or maybe oftentimes if the child’s nails grow that quick.
