No need to be intimidated. Just follow these suggestions that the Nemours Foundation offers:
- Have someone else, or your partner hold your child while trimming his or her nails.
- Look for a place as well as a position where you and your baby are comfortable with, such as trimming your child’s nails while in a rocking chair, or have your child sit on your lap comfortably.
- You may want to do the trimming activities while your child is asleep.
- Hold your child’s palm and his or her tiny finger to make sure that the fingers don’t move as you trim the nails.
- Try using infant clippers or nail scissors which are designed for children’s use.
- Instead of using the rough part of a nail clipper to file the nails, use an emery board especially made for infant’s use.
- You may not be able to do this perfectly the first tie, so do not panic if you notice some blood. Dab the cut using a sterile gauze but never use bandage. Your child might be able to remove the bandage and put it into his or her mouth, which can lead to choking.
- Make it a habit to trim your child’s nails for at least once every week, or maybe oftentimes if the child’s nails grow that quick.
